As a long-time 6.5 Creedmoor shooter, this news of the military’s choice to convert its M110 rifles from .308 to 6.5CM has me absolutely fired up! This all started when my buddy TwoTenthsLeft, an incredible Rimfire competitor, sent me a post on Instagram from Bryan_litz_ballistics at Applied Ballistics. I love when friends share game-changing news, so I dove right in to see what this could mean for the future of 6.5CM shooters like us.
Why the Military Chose 6.5 Creedmoor Over .308

The switch to 6.5CM isn’t just about replacing one round with another—it’s about gaining precision and performance advantages that the .308 simply couldn’t deliver. Performance comparisons in my original post highlighted a significant edge for 6.5CM, with a 93% hit probability at 600 meters compared to 80% for .308 and an impressive 63% hit probability at 800 meters versus .308’s 40% (National Defense Magazine, 2024). These numbers underscore why SOCOM is leaning toward the 6.5CM for more accurate hits in unpredictable environments.
Beyond the ballistics, SOCOM’s investment in conversion kits for M110 rifles will allow them to utilize 6.5CM with reduced recoil and enhanced wind resistance, which directly improves precision in the field (Task & Purpose, 2024). These innovations could mean that 6.5CM will not only gain traction but enjoy continued production improvements thanks to military demand. With millions invested, we may even see benefits in the civilian market.
How Will This Affect Civilian 6.5CM Shooters?

Military adoption doesn’t just mean a boost in production; it often brings accessible and advanced gear to civilian markets. This increased production could make 6.5 Creedmoor even more mainstream, potentially driving down prices as competition rises. We might see better-performing rounds at reduced costs, but even if prices remain steady, the quality and diversity of 6.5CM offerings will only grow (Spec Ops Magazine, 2024). It’s a promising future, especially as manufacturers look to capture both military and civilian markets.
A Promising Future for Precision Shooters
The military’s interest in the 6.5 Creedmoor might be just the beginning. Combining the caliber’s high accuracy with military-grade reliability positions it as an ideal choice for precision shooters. The community of 6.5CM enthusiasts has a lot to look forward to, and I, for one, am thrilled to see how this caliber evolves, especially with R&D driving even more innovations. This is an exciting time for the 6.5 Creedmoor community, and with friends like TwoTenthsLeft and insights from pros like Bryan Litz, I’m more excited than ever to see what’s next. Stay tuned for more updates—this is just the start!
