MDT Downgrade Project: Field Stock & Oryx Bipods

Writer: MacMac

When it comes to precision shooting, MDT (Modular Driven Technologies) stands as a towering figure, constantly innovating and setting benchmarks in the industry. Years ago, when I first envisioned building a custom rifle, the MDT ESS chassis immediately caught my attention. It had the robust, tactical look I desired and showcased an early glimpse of modularity that set it apart from anything else on the market. The ESS was more than just a chassis—it was an invitation to explore precision shooting at a new level.

Admittedly, my journey with MDT has had its detours. I briefly transitioned to the original J Allen (JAE) chassis, drawn by its unique aesthetics and functionality. However, when JAE ceased operations and MDT introduced the ACC chassis, I knew it was time to come back. The MDT ACC Premier became my go-to setup for competitive shooting, offering unparalleled adjustability and precision. When MDT later acquired the rights to the JAE 700 chassis, I was thrilled, but I stayed loyal to the ACC Premier—it has been my trusted companion for years.

While I’ve considered upgrading to the ACC Elite or the ACC Premier 2, I’ve hesitated. These setups are undeniably impressive, but I’m not sure they align with my current needs. Yet, MDT’s commitment to innovation ensures that whatever choice I make, it will be top-tier.

But this article isn’t about the high-end competition setups I’ve grown to admire. Today, I want to highlight two MDT products designed for versatility and accessibility: the MDT Field Stock Chassis System and the Oryx Bipod.

The MDT Field Stock and Oryx Bipod: A Versatile Duo

The MDT Field Stock Chassis System and Oryx Bipod serve as an excellent entry point into the world of precision shooting. Traditionally, these components are used in two primary ways:

  1. A Lightweight and Adjustable Hunting Setup: The Field Stock is perfect for hunters who value a customized fit. Whether you’re tailoring the setup to your unique needs or sharing it with multiple people on a hunt, this system adapts seamlessly. Its lightweight design and adjustability make it ideal for the unpredictable conditions of the field.

  2. An Upgrade for Legacy Hunting Rifles: If you have an older hunting rifle or a basic stock setup from a gun store, the Field Stock offers a significant upgrade. Combined with the Oryx Bipod, it transforms your rifle into a more competitive and versatile tool, suitable for precision shooting and beyond.

The MDT Downgrade Project: Field Stock and Oryx Bipod in Action

99% of the videos you see on this setup will be about upgrading your system. Given there are so many videos like that out there, I wanted to explore a world where someone wanted to jump into F-Class  and how the stock would hold up. I believe the only way to truly know this is to keep every other high-end component on the system and only change out the chassis. On my competition build, I was running the March 8x80 scope (Sourced through MKMachining), Heavy Tactical 1-Piece Mount (Red), MK Machining accessories (XLP level, magnifiers, parallax wheel, scope caps), Bat Machine Action, with Wolf Precision ACE, Krieger Barrel, EC Tuner, Two-stage Trigger Tech Diamond Trigger, all in the Field Stock using the Oryx Bipods. I embarked on a project I’ve dubbed the MDT Downgrade Project. I temporarily set aside my competition-ready MDT ACC Premier 1 setup, which has been customized from my original PRS setup to serve as my dedicated F-Class rig, and replaced it with the Field Stock and Oryx Bipod. Here’s what I discovered...

Build and Functionality

The Field Stock impressed me with its solid construction and user-friendly adjustability, delivering exceptional performance despite being a more affordable option compared to MDT’s high-end chassis systems. At 100 and 300 yards, there was no noticeable shift in my impacts. In fact, at 100 yards, I managed a 5-shot group that resulted in a touching group in the X.

One aspect that stood out was the system’s weight—or lack thereof. While I appreciated how light it was for carrying around, it sometimes caught me off guard. On several occasions, I instinctively jerked the setup when picking it up because I underestimated its weight. To balance things out, I added two MDT exterior weights and an Arca rail on the bottom. These additions provided extra functionality for my Seb Neo X front rest, even though they weren’t necessary for the bipods.

For $299 for the Field Stock and $99 for the Oryx bipods, this setup is tough to beat. It functions like a beast. Reflecting on my shooting journey, I realized I had waited years to afford the perfect competition setup. Had I known how well these entry-level systems could perform, I would have confidently started with a setup like this and upgraded components over time. This project was a great reminder of the effectiveness and value these entry-level setups offer. Even with its lighter build, the shooting performance was on par with my more robust competition setup. Paired with the Oryx Bipod, the system provided stable support and smooth operation, handling challenging environments with ease.

Final Thoughts

MDT’s ability to cater to shooters across the spectrum—from seasoned competitors to first-time builders—is a testament to their industry leadership. The Field Stock and Oryx Bipod may not carry the prestige of the ACC or Elite system, but they embody MDT’s commitment to quality, innovation, and accessibility.

While I didn’t have the opportunity to take this setup to 1,000 yards, I have a special idea for this system where it’s going to get the use it deserves. Stay tuned! Whether you’re upgrading an old rifle or seeking a lightweight, customizable hunting setup, the MDT Field Stock and Oryx Bipod offer incredible value. Through the MDT Downgrade Project, I’ve gained a new appreciation for these products and the versatility they bring to the table.

If you’ve ever considered exploring MDT’s offerings, there’s no better time than now. Whether you’re just starting your journey or looking to enhance your current setup, MDT has something for everyone.

Note: MDT provided the products for this review; however, all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.
