BAT Machine’s Firing Pin Decocking Tool: A Must-Have for Precision Shooters

Writer: MacMac

In the world of precision shooting, BAT Machine has earned a reputation as a leader in rifle action design and manufacturing. Founded by Bruce Thom, the company’s journey began with a passion for craftsmanship and innovation, culminating in a storied legacy that has revolutionized the shooting sports.

BAT Machine was officially established in the early 1990s, starting with the production of falling block single-shot rifles. By 1994, the company shifted its focus to bolt actions for benchrest shooting, a pivotal move that addressed the increasing demand for precision in competitive shooting. Their large Model L action, designed in 1995 for 1000-yard unlimited benchrest competitions, was a breakthrough that cemented BAT’s place in the long-range shooting community.

Key Milestones in BAT Machine's History:

  • 1996: BAT Machine became a full-time business. Production of the Model B and Model M receivers began.

  • 1997: The company installed its first CNC machining center with 4-axis capabilities and hired Tom Dickson, whose contributions to customer relations and product development were instrumental in BAT’s success.

  • 1998-1999: Additional CNC turning centers were installed, and models SB and MB were introduced.

  • 2000: BAT Machine expanded from a two-car garage to a 2,200 sq. ft. facility, doubling its milling capabilities and starting design work on the Model 3L.

  • 2001-2004: The company introduced the Model 3L, RS, RL, VR, and HR actions, including repeaters based on the Remington 700 footprint.

  • 2006-2010: BAT adopted advanced technology, including 5-axis machining centers and a 9-axis machining center with a bar feeder, which streamlined production processes. The shop also underwent multiple expansions to accommodate new equipment.

  • 2015-2017: The Neuvo action was designed and shipped, and the company moved into a state-of-the-art facility with expanded capabilities, including a Wire EDM machine.

  • 2018-2021: Innovations continued with the EXS model for King of Two-Mile competitions, the long-range Neuvo LR, and aluminum body actions such as the Bumblebee and Vampire. In 2021, BAT celebrated 25 years of full-time operations.

Commitment to Excellence: BAT Machine’s dedication to precision is evident in its use of cutting-edge CNC technology and premium materials. Their innovative designs and meticulous craftsmanship have set the benchmark for performance in the shooting community. From the early days of crafting falling block rifles to today’s state-of-the-art actions, BAT Machine’s evolution reflects their relentless pursuit of perfection.

One of the standout accessories from BAT Machine is their Firing Pin Decocking Tool. Designed with the same precision and quality as their renowned rifle actions, this tool is indispensable for shooters who regularly service or work on their firearms. It is a simple but mighty tool.

What Is the BAT Machine Firing Pin Decocking Tool?

The BAT Machine Firing Pin Decocking Tool is a specialized device designed to safely and efficiently decock your rifle's firing pin spring and remove the firing pin assembly from the bolt body. Precision-engineered to work with all BAT Machine actions featuring a bayonet-style shroud, this tool is a must-have for shooters who maintain their rifles.

Decocking and removing the firing pin spring can be a daunting and potentially hazardous task without the proper equipment. If you've ever accidentally had the cocking piece fall down the ramp or needed to check firing pin fall with the bolt out of the action, you know how tricky these situations can be. The BAT Machine Decocking Tool makes this process seamless and safe, eliminating guesswork and reducing the risk of damage to your rifle or injury to yourself.

Key Features and Compatibility

  • For BAT Actions with Bayonet-Style Shrouds - Specifically designed for modern BAT actions, the decocking tool ensures a precise fit for smooth operation.

    • Note: Older BAT actions with a thread-in style shroud (discontinued in the early 2000s) require a separate firing pin removal tool tailored to that design.

  • Durable and Chemical-Resistant Material - The tool is made from a chemical-resistant material, ensuring it stands up to repeated use and exposure to cleaning solvents.

  • Variations in Fit and Finish - As part of the initial production batch, slight variations in color, surface finish, and fit are expected. The Small Lug and Big Lug versions may fit tightly on pre-2015 shrouds, which is why they are currently offered at a discounted rate.

  • Specific Tools for Various Models - BAT Machine provides model-specific tools to ensure the best fit and functionality for each rifle action.

Why You Need This Tool

  • Safety First - The compressed firing pin spring in your bolt assembly can be dangerous to work with. The BAT Machine Firing Pin Decocking Tool securely holds the assembly, allowing you to decock the spring safely without worrying about accidental misfires or parts flying loose.

  • Ease of Maintenance - Servicing your rifle becomes much easier with the right tool. Whether you’re inspecting, cleaning, or replacing components, this tool simplifies the process, saving you time and frustration.

  • Built to Last - Like all BAT Machine products, this decocking tool is built with durability in mind. The chemical-resistant material ensures long-term reliability, even with frequent use.

An Essential Tool for Precision Shooting

The BAT Machine Firing Pin Decocking Tool embodies the quality and craftsmanship BAT Machine is renowned for. Whether you’re maintaining your rifle for competition, hunting, or general use, this tool ensures your firearm remains in peak condition. With its thoughtful design and compatibility with BAT’s industry-leading actions, the decocking tool is a small but impactful addition to your toolkit.
